Unlike traditional open surgery, gynaecological endoscopy allows for treatment through very small incisions or, in some cases, no incision at all. For example, fibroids can be removed through laparoscopic myomectomy using a small incision, or through hysteroscopic myomectomy without any external incision.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is performed using a thin instrument called a laparoscope, which is inserted through a small incision near the navel. This procedure is commonly used to:

  • Remove adhesions around the fallopian tubes and ovaries
  • Treat endometriosis by removing or destroying abnormal tissue
  • Manage anovulation related to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Remove uterine fibroids

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy involves examining the inside of the uterus using a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted instrument inserted through the vagina. It is primarily used to diagnose and treat conditions within the uterine cavity, including:

  • Asherman’s Syndrome, where scar tissue forms inside the uterus
  • Submucous fibroids and endometrial polyps
  • Cervical stenosis through gentle dilation of the cervix
  • Removal of embedded intrauterine devices (IUDs)
  • Correction of uterine abnormalities such as a septum
