How HIFU Works

HIFU works by concentrating high-frequency ultrasound waves onto a specific area within the body, in this case, the fibroid. These waves generate heat at a precise focal point, raising the temperature of the fibroid tissue to a level that causes it to break down.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the process:

1. Targeting the Fibroid
Using advanced imaging (usually ultrasound or MRI guidance), the doctor identifies the exact size, shape, and location of the fibroid.

2. Focused Energy Delivery
Ultrasound waves are directed through the skin and tissues without causing damage, converging only at the fibroid.

3. Thermal Ablation
At the focal point, temperatures rise significantly, destroying fibroid cells while leaving surrounding tissues unharmed.

4. Gradual Shrinkage
Over time, the treated fibroid shrinks, leading to relief from symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure.

Because the treatment is precise and controlled, it minimizes risk and allows patients to remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Before Each Session

  • No sex 3 days before treatment
  • Remove IUD if any
  • Shave entire pubic area
  • Bowel preparation with enema
  • Diet requirements:
  • 3 days before: Light diet low in vegetables and beans
  • 1 day before: Liquid diet
  • 8 hours before: No eating

After Each Session

  • Lie prone for about 2 hours after treatment
  • Liquid food is allowed 2 hours after treatment and normal diet can be resumed 24 hours after treatment
  • Keep the pubic area clean
  • No sex after treatment till the next menstrual cycle
  • Temporary contraception may be advised for a few months
  • Inserting of IUD should only be done after 3 normal menstrual cycles
  • Follow up with ultrasound or MRI scan is advised (3, 6 and 12 months)
